Mary was born May 12, 1925 at St. Alexius hospital in Bismarck. She was raised and educated in Mandan as the second youngest of the six children of Leo and Genevieve (Metcalf) Broderick, graduating from Mandan High School in 1944.
She moved to the Twin Cities to attend the Minneapolis School of Art, focusing on oil painting. Upon graduation, she returned to Mandan to pursue her art career, later spending time in San Francisco and Denver before returning to North Dakota for good in December 1952.
Upon return, she found employment in the fledgling North Dakota oil industry and worked for, and was acquainted with, many of the early oil field professionals. This is where she was introduced to her husband, Steve, who she married in October 1955. In the following years they raised their 5 children, all the while being involved in many community organizations, clubs and societies.
As a passionate historian, Mary personally researched and compiled large volumes of historical information on her family and the ND oil industry. She was a charter and life member of the Mandan Historical Society and served on its Board of Directors, as well as a trustee for the State Historical Society of North Dakota Foundation. Mary was a tremendous advocate and instrumental in establishing the network that was used to fund and create the North Dakota Heritage Center and the State Historical Society of North Dakota Foundation.
Mary had a love for life and was a peaceful, gentle and loving soul. She loved to travel to experience new ideas, customs and cultures. Mary was an accomplished golfer, once winning the club championship at Apple Creek Golf Course. Other sports she enjoyed included tennis, fencing and cross-country skiing.
Mary is survived by three sons, Bruce, Sidney, Montana, Terry (Kristy), Mandan, and Wayne (Wynona), Bismarck; six, grandchildren, Kyle, Evan, Nathan, Samantha, Alex, and Nicole; numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Genevieve Broderick, her brothers Bill and Jack, her sisters Florence, Jane and Marge, her husband Steven H. Harris, her daughter Genevieve Diane Harris and her son Steven G. Harris.
