Obituary for Arlene Jane Benson

Arlene Jane Benson, 88, Mandan, North Dakota, passed away peacefully in her home, Wednesday, November 29, 2017. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, December 2, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Twin Butte, North Dakota with Fr. Darnis officiating. Visitation is scheduled for 5-7 PM with a Rosary/Vigil Service beginning at 7:00 PM, Friday, December 1, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Fort Yates.

Arlene was born June 18, 1929, at Poplar, Montana, to Eli and Mary (Black Tongue) Reddoor. She was raised and educated on Standing Rock and in the Fort Yates, and Little Eagle communities. Arlene’s Indian name was Tashunke Tokaheya Mani Win, (Her Horse Leads First). She attended school at United Tribes in the fall of 1975 receiving a Human Services/Counseling Certificate. Arlene graduated from Mary College ion 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in social work. After graduation she worked at United Tribes and the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Fort Yates.

Arlene married Paul Long Chase and from this union she had one daughter Paulette Long Chase. She became a widow a year after the birth of her daughter. Arlene went on to marry Edwin J. Benson on August 22, 1955 in Stanton, North Dakota. From this union they had three daughters; Mary Lynn, Janet, and Heidi. She also raised Norman “Kawligah” Benson along with her daughters in Twin Buttes.

She enjoyed sewing, star quilt making, baking, cooking for family and friends, where she was considered an excellent cook. Arlene enjoyed telling stories of the old days and stories of our childhood. She was always willing to help others in need. She really enjoyed powwows in her spare time. Our mother was a devout Catholic, remaining faithful her entire life. She was very involved in the Catholic Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary Lynn Eagle Staff, Mandan, Janet Benson, and Heidi (Miquel) Hernandez, both of Halliday; one sister, Geraldine Jamerson, Little Eagle, South Dakota; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Ruth Yellow Hawk, Magdalena Red Legs, Marletta Looking Horse; twin brothers, Eli and Elijah Reddoor; stepfather, James Martinez; Stepbrothers, Robert Martinez, Carly Martinez; stepsister, Lavera Martinez; daughter, Paulette Long Chase; grandsons, Marcus Jahner, Brian Eagle, Antonio Benson Hernandez; and several great-grandchildren.
